'Govt to discuss pros and cons of revising guarantees,' says Home Minister G Parameshwara

Bengaluru: A day after stating that the guarantees must reach only the poor, Home Minister G Parameshwara clarified on Tuesday that he had only assured of discussing the issue in response to a suggestion by Turuvekere JD(S) MLA M T Krishnappa.

. Speaking to reporters in the city, Parameshwara said: “Several income tax payers, government servants and others are voluntarily relinquishing the guarantees. As a continuation, Krishnappa suggested in the Tumakuru district KDP meeting that it should be only for the poor. At that point, I assured that we will discuss the issue.”

.Guarantee benefits must reach only the poor: Home Minister G Parameshwara . Months ago, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi had also articulated that the guarantees must become more poor-centric.

. “We will discuss the pros and cons of revising the guarantee schemes. During the elections, we hadn’t talked of restricting the guarantees to BPL card holders. If we are to change it now, we have to discuss its political impact and then, the government will take a decision,” said Parameshwara.

. The minister said they had rolled out the guarantees despite knowing that it was a “strain” on the exchequer, to help the poor.

. Belagavi incident

. Speaking about the assault on a conductor in Belagavi, the minister said he had directed the IGP and the SP (Belagavi) to study why a Pocso case was filed against the conductor and submit a report.

. “Today, pro-Kannada organisations have been permitted to conduct peaceful protests in Belagavi in reaction to the alleged violent action by Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti. In case of any untoward incidents, we will initiate action as per the law.”
